The work of. Shirtey Brice-Heath is a good example of ethnographic research, Although quite old now, it is still considered to be influential today. Brice-Heath spent ten years fving and working among two comimunities in the Piedmont Carolinas in America, studying their lan guage use. The communities were khown as "Trackton' and Roadviile', the former beinga Black working-class community and the latter a white working-class community. Among her many findings. Brice-Heath tound that ways of talking and interacting in one community that seemed natural' to its members were culturally unfamiliar to the other community. She stresses the Reed to view language acquisitlan and conventions within.a sociocultural context. In terms of the research conducted, Brice-Heath engaged in long term participation and observation in the two communities (Brice Heath, 1983: 9). She goes on to say, The reader should see Ways with Words as an unfinished story, in which the characters are real people: Whose lves go on Beyond the decade covered in this book, and for whom we cannot, within these pages, either resofve the plot or complete the story (19B3: 13),

모든 것이 인과관계가 아니라 상호작용이라는 것을 알고 있다. 자연스러운 환경에서 주어진 그룹의 일상적인 문화에 대한 분석을 보며 친숙한 것을 낮설게 만드는 개념이 문화기술지연구에서 쉽게 볼 수 있는 개념이라고 생각된다. 이는 실험상황에서 연구하는 것과는 반대되는 진정한 힘이 일상적이고 습관적인 순간에서 관찰된다고 판단한다.
일상적이고 습관적인 순간에서 나오는 진정한 힘은 일반화가 되기가 어렵겠지만 연구에서 있어서 통찰력을 볼 수 있다. 또 양적연구와는 다른 풍부한 설명을 할 수 있다는 강점을 갖는다. 문화적 맥락을 파악할 수 있고 문화의 중요성을 을 수집할 수 있다.
